In service to our goal of increasing opportunities for members and those seeking recovery to feel a sense of safety and belonging, we have been discussing ways in which the language we use to refer to people could be more inclusive. The Fellowship has been discussing this topic for several years now and more than three-quarters of respondents to the 2026 CAR Survey said they were willing to explore changes to the wording in NA literature to describe people without making reference to their gender.

We are excited to announce that the proposed revision of IP #1 has been posted at na.org/genderproject. At the World Service Conference this year, conference participants agreed to create a draft version of IP #1 in which members are referred to in gender-neutral terms. As discussed at the WSC, we are not proposing changes to the Steps or Traditions this cycle. 

A number of participants at the conference explained that many members weren’t completely clear on what this type of inclusive language might look like—the parameters of this stage of these proposed revisions. Some said that they and/or their regions needed to see a draft in order to make an informed decision. The decision by the conference to start with IP #1 was a natural outgrowth of this conversation.

The four suggested wording changes are shown in the table below in bold:

This draft will be available for review and input by any member of the Fellowship until the end of October. The cover memo attached to the draft explains all this more clearly. Please read and share!

The Fellowship input on IP#1 will help determine what next steps to take with the project. Any final decisions about approval of NA literature will be made by the Fellowship through the 2029 CAR.

In other news…

“Little by slowly,” as some of our members say, the online store is being improved. If you purchase literature, medallions, or gift products from NA World Services, you know it can sometimes be a challenge. We are happy to announce that we are doing what we can to improve the user experience in the webstore—including updated search capabilities. Some customers that shop at WSO-Europe may see a banner asking for permission to use cookies. We regret the inconvenience, but rest assured this is part of an effort to improve the online store to make the shopping experience easier and more enjoyable. Also, we recently updated the price lists, which include the newly revised versions of IP 21 (Item 3121) and H&I Basics (Item 2101G).
